Circles of Silence...Kathak
The Kathak Gurukul rests a ways off from the rest of Nrityagram, somewhat reflective of this styles distant birthplace in Northern India. Winding flowery paths approach the Gurukul, the strong symmetrical base of slate rock, red brick and large door-like windows.
Mortar-less stone-filled archways are a distinguishing characteristic of the Gurukul. Relying on nothing more than ancient physics, the fine silvery stones are suspended in space, frozen in non-existent motion. They are like the style they house, deceptively re-treading song and percussion in its imperceptible lightening of footwork and sinuous hand movements.
The Kathak Gurukul at Nrityagram was inaugurated in 1994. The building is sponsored by the Inlaks Foundation and Peter Candill, a philanthropist.
