Amid the Temple Walls...Odissi Gurukul
Of all
the diverse edifices that highlight Nrityagram's
campus, it is the Odissi Gurukul that most
mystifies the viewer. Its half-moon arches
of stone comprise an open gateway, introducing
a motif that fills its domain. Natural raw
faces of stone fill its walls, suspended with
strength that counters the giving gestures
of the dance it houses. Your hands reach out
to feel the natural contours, to experience
the vision architect Gerard da Cunha so impressed
upon his assistants, the need for imperfect
stone.
Here the spirit of Orissan temples re-conjures
the magic of thousands of years, here the
lull of Nrityagram and even the sprinkles
of Nature's sound dissipate.
The Odissi Gurukul at Nrityagram was inaugurated
in 1990. The building is sponsored by Raymond. |
