Protima
Gauri Bedi |
(October 12,
1948 - August 18, 1998)
Initiated into Odissi at the age of twenty-six,
Protima became one of the most well known dancers
in India through sheer grit and willpower. Gifted
with a remarkably mobile face and beautifully expressive
eyes, she was made for this style, which abounds
in sensuousness, lyricism and illusive tenderness.
She brought to her recitals a dynamic vibrancy and
magnetism that is unmatched by most other performers
in this field. Over the last two decades she had
more than five hundred performances in India and
abroad to her credit. Watching her dance was like
witnessing the sculptures of Orissa coming to life.
Protima's most notable contribution to the world
of Indian classical dance is Nrityagram, the world's
first and only dance village situated in the outskirts
of Bangalore.
Protima was the Founder of Nrityagram. |
